Welcome to the Floating World of Ukiyoe
Why floating? Yes sometimes they are on the river but it means our
changing existence in all its transience.
These are glimpses of the day to day life of people at home or on the
street in the Edo period, those prints that the Parisians of the Belle
Epoque went crazy about, when they were used as a kind of wrapping for
the blue and white china shipped from Japan. Just like fish and chips
newspaper. The scenes of ordinary life are shown in gorgeous deep
colours in their settings of landscape, fashion, travels, entertainment
or events. Even though they started in the feudal Edo age (C17-C19)
before Westernisation, their popularity continued until they became a
focus of nostalgia in the modernized Meiji of trains and department
stores. They became collectables and rivalry for acquiring them was led
by world museums.
